Teaching Students How to Create Professional Social Media Post

May 22, 2023

Purpose

If we want students to create content about digital equity, we must equip them with the necessary skills to create social media content. The UW Bothell Digital Scholars program is for first-generation students who want to gain skills in areas such as digital marketing, data analytics, social media, and data visualization while being part of a supportive cohort community. Our Dear Digital Equity workshop aims to empower Digital Scholar students and bridge the divide for digital equity. The skills we introduced in our workshop skills are transferable in the digital world as Digital Scholar students prepare for a summer career-connected project. A second use of our workshop was to test the social media curriculum that IMD students have been developing this quarter.

Creating a Social Media Post

We first gave a brief presentation with some tips on making professional media posts.

In our workshop we covered…

  • Alternative Text

  • Visual Content

  • Branding

  • Professional Voice

  • Canva Introduction

Students were given 35 minutes to work on their social media posts. IMD helped facilitate the workshop and provided hands-on assistance When questions arose about how to use certain software or any technical questions, the IMD students readily offered their assistance, assuming the role of facilitators.

Students were able to choose between two prompts to work on for their social media post:

  • A promo for the Digital Scholars Program based on your personal understanding of the program

  • Provided with a message by our Community Advisors at Goodwill, create a promo about the Goodwill Connect program
